1/3/2004 Happy New Year!

The loser pool ended with a bang last week, with 6 players going down, leaving Jeff Dana as this year’s champion. The Koth is down to 2; John Knipfer who has taken Indy, and Kevin Oliff who is going with The Pack. Good Luck!

12/27/2003 11:00am

Pix are up for week 17! Good luck!

12/20/2003 10:00am

Everyone survived last week & week 16 picks are now up! Good luck!

12/13/2003 10:30am

Picks are live for week 15! Down to 7 in the loser and only 3 in the Koth!

12/6/2003 6:00pm

Everyone survived week 13- Koth stands at 4, and the Loser is at 9… errr… I mean 8… So 11-3 is 8 after all. Week 14 picks are up! 3 different games picked in the Koth and 6 different picked in the Loser! Could weed out a few more this week! Good luck!

11/28/2003 10:00pm

Last week 5 more went out in the Koth, leaving only 4! Loser is down to 9. Week 13 picks are up. Could be a boring week- everyone in the loser pool picked SDI & 3 out of the 4 in the Koth picked KCI.

11/22/2003 10:00am

Week 12 picks are live!

11/18/2003 6:30pm

Only 3 went down in the Koth this week, and everyone survived in the Loser pool.

11/15/2003 11:00am

The pix are up. Good luck to all!

11/11/2003 7:00pm Veterans Day. Thanks to all who have served our country to help create an environment where picking football games gets more attention than daily survival.

So I can’t pick football teams. Why did Atlanta pick this week to figure out how to play? King of the Hill is now down to 12 and the Loser is sitting at 11. Another week like last week and it will be all over!! Good luck to those few of you still in it!

11/07/2003 1130pm

So I can’t count. The loser pool had 39 go out, leaving 33. At any rate, the pix for week 10 are all up! Good luck!

11/04/2003 8pm

The Bucs officially suck. Over half the pool (46 to be exact) went down, leaving 26. In the loser of the week, 38 out with 34 left.

11/01/2003 2pm

Week 9 picks are live and in color! Good luck!

10/28/2003 630pm

We have both pools down to 72 after week 8.

We also are adjusting the actual number of entries in the KOTH down by 1, from 372 to 371. One person (Tami Kincer) who we thought signed up actually didn’t. She had not actually confirmed she was playing, and never sent in any picks. In the first week we gave her the default, which lost. This was a mix-up on our part, but hey, it was a little hectic last month. J

10/25/2003 5pm

Week 8 picks are up for KOTH and the Loser of the Week. We ended up with 106 players in this year’s Loser pool. Good luck to all!

10/21/2003 7pm

Stupid Browns! They knocked out 8, including one of mine. A dozen or so koth players were among a busload of us, who watched in person, as the Bengals took out 8 more along with the Ravens. Another 9 went down with the Bucs and Dolphins, leaving us at 93.

Don’t forget- this week (week 8) we start the Loser of the Week pool. Send in your requests today. Deadline for registration is Saturday at 1pm. If you are in both pools you can send both picks together, but clarify which pick is for which pool!!

10/18/2003 11:30am

Week 7 picks are up!

10/14/2003 8:00pm

Only 7 went out this week.

10/10/2003 11:00pm

Week 6 picks are posted.

We will be starting the Loser Pool week 8. Contrary to its name, you do NOT have to have lost in the KOTH to join the Loser pool. You do not even have to have played, so if you know anyone who thought the KOTH would be fun but missed the start, tell them they can get into this one. It works exactly the same, only different. Each week, pick a team you think will LOSE. If they win or tie, you're done. If they lose, you stay in. Last loser-picker left alive wins. Everything else is the same as the Koth. Historically this pool is about 1/3 the size of the main Koth, so it will probably be around 75-100. Send email to koth@zathras.com to sign up in the Loser Pool.

If you're in both pools you can send your picks in one email.. just clearly state who you want to lose, and who you want to win.

Speaking of emailing picks, all picks for both pools can be sent to koth@zathras.com. This is now a shared email account which we both access, so any picks sent to that address will be seen by both of us. Remember, deadline for picks is 5pm on Fridays.

Great news on John- His rehab is progressing well enough that he got to go home yesterday! In fact, I went out to dinner with them tonight, and he was damn happy to be out of the hospital. Five weeks. Damn, that would just suck. Jenny & John send their sincere appreciation for all of the prayers and thoughts that have been sent their way.

10/7/2003 5:30pm

Wow! What a week in the NFL. We are standing at 125 as 43 people went down in flames, and nearly that many more nearly bit it with Buffalo barely squeaking by the lowly Bengals. It has to suck to be a Tampa fan who went to bed with a 21 point lead at the 57 minute mark.

10/4/2003 8pm

Picks are up! I have added a second picks link. Since the size of the complete pick spreadsheet is getting pretty big, I am adding a page which has the current week only, sorted in team-picked order. The complete season picks page shows every player’s picks for all weeks, sorted in player order.

John is making great progress and may actually get to come home next week!

10/1/2003 10:30pm

I knew Denver was gonna pull it out.. whew! Down to 168. Quite a few people have been asking about the loser pool. We probably will do one, and probably will start it around week 8. I’ll let everyone know on here and via email.

I saw John Sunday- he was beginning his rehab sessions and was looking much better than last time I saw him. He is scheduled to be there from 1 to 3 weeks before he finally gets to go home.

9/27/2003 8:30pm

Picks are up! Half the pool is going with Denver… (GO BRONCOS!)

9/23/2003

This was a brutal week! After the early games I thought we’d escape with most of the pool intact, but 2 big upsets helped push the casualty total to 183, leaving only 189.

Note- 3 players’ picks were changed between the time I posted the first sheet early Sunday morning, and the final update around 11am. Please make sure you do not pick a team with a bye. If we notice it, and we can get in touch with you, we’ll ask you for another one. If not, you’ll get the default pick (MNF visitor).

Also, there’s an E-mail worm/virus making the rounds- it claims to be from Microsoft, with an attachment that is supposedly a security upgrade. I have received well over a hundred of them in the last few days. It works by emailing itself from your computer to addresses it finds in your address book or in emails which you’ve received. Everyone should have an up-to-date antivirus program installed to prevent these from spreading! And of course, never open an attachment unless you are certain what it is.

Update on John & Jenny- they will be returning to Dayton this weekend- John is being transferred to a local hospital where he will spend several weeks in rehab. He has been upgraded from critical to serious.

9/21/2003 12:30am

Picks are posted! 372 Players! Some players have asked about using a nickname on the web. Just let me know if you want one and I’ll set that up for you.

Anyway, I’m tired. Good night and good luck!

9/20/2003 6:00pm

367… 368… 369… sheesh.. they keep coming in! We’re around 370 as of 5pm! With this being the first week, we’re giving people as much time as possible to get their picks in, so I won’t be posting the sheet til later tonite. At some point we’ll make the decision to call it final and get the spreadsheet posted.

We’re in at least 15 states now! CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IN, KY, LA, MI, MO, NE, NV, NY, OH, & WI. If you’re in another state, let me know and I’ll add it to the count.

Here’s the latest info on John. Today he underwent a successful surgery to install a permanent shunt. He had been on a ventilator since Tuesday, and finally had it removed immediately following the surgery. Jenny said things went very well and wanted me to pass on her thanks to everyone who has been thinking of them and praying for them.

9/17/2003

Get ready for the 2003 King of the Hill….

Jenny was able to take a few minutes last night to send me most of her signups & contact info. I will be down in Cincy Friday visiting them, and afterwards we plan on putting the final pool together. At this point we are looking at around 325 entries. If you are not on my email list, please let me know. All picks this week should be sent to koth@zathras.com.

Update on John & the Koth:

Karen & I went down to Cincinnati Saturday to visit John and hang out with Jenny & her ‘waiting room gang’. Saturday’s gang consisted of John Creekmore, Tammy Campbell, Ruby (John’s mom), and Tom & Kitty (Jenny’s mom & dad). Jenny & Ruby (and sometimes others) are staying in a dorm nearby and show up early each morning, before the first visitation, and sort of camp out in the waiting room til after the last visitation around 8:30pm. Each day, they pack in all sorts of gear to help them weather the harsh waiting room environment- coolers, food, puzzles, cards, cell phones, and other necessities. The hospital does not allow pack mules, so they have to lug all this stuff in by hand!

There are only 4 visitations each day, and each one lasts just 30-45 minutes. We got there a little before the 3rd visitation, and I got to see John for about 10 minutes. He was looking pretty good, all things considered. He didn’t say a word to me the whole time I was there, but since he was sound asleep I suppose I can forgive him for that. ;) He was sort of hiccupping in his sleep, and sounded rather congested- Jenny said he was still recovering from pneumonia.

Up until last Friday, some of the drugs they were giving him were preventing him from really understanding what was happening to him. Fortunately they’ve taken him off of those and he’s showing improvement each day.

I talked to Jenny earlier tonight, and she said it was a good day today- they are doing another surgery Thursday to put in a permanent shunt. Each day is a step forward, and Jenny wanted me to pass on her thanks to all of you who have sent their thoughts and prayers. Oh, and the hiccups are finally gone- he had them for over a week! Ugh! Imagine having hiccups for a week and not being able to toss back a cold one!! Don’t worry John, I have a box of Coronas with your name on it- just as soon as the doc says okay.

On the Koth, we think we will be able to get organized this weekend to begin. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we’ll get together Friday night to put it all together. So, get your picks in for week 3 asap because it is highly likely that we will begin. Just in time to be past all the upsets… riiiight…..

Email your week 3 picks to me at koth@zathras.com and check back here thru the week for any more news and updates.

9/10/2003

John’s surgery was successful, but the next 10 days are still a very critical period and Jenny will not be returning home for some time. So unfortunately, we will not be able to get together to get the data organized this week, and King of the Hill 2003 will not begin with week 2.

So hang tight and enjoy some football this weekend without the pressure of having to pick a winner. At this point we do plan on starting week 3, and I’ll confirm that with an email and a web update next Wednesday night.

9/6/2003

Important announcement to all King of the Hill 2003 players:

We will be postponing the start of this year’s KOTH pool until either week 2 or week 3. Jenny’s husband, John, suffered an aneurism last night, and is undergoing brain surgery today to install a shunt. Please keep Jenny and John in your prayers as he undergoes this very serious procedure.

Friday night Jenny and I had planned on getting together and putting the KOTH spreadsheet together for this year’s pool. She and I each act as a ‘registration’ point, and historically we each get about half of the total players. We each have around 150 players signed up, so I believe we will break 300 entries in this year’s pool.

On their way over, she called and said John was suddenly not feeling well and that we would just get together today (Saturday) to organize the pool. They never made it back to their house last night- they ended up going straight to the hospital and have been there ever since. Actually they’re at their 3rd hospital now, down in Cincinnati, where they’ll perform the operation.

Needless to say, Jenny has more important things to deal with this weekend than the football pool. I talked with her this morning and suggested that we postpone the start until we can get together and organize the data. At this point I don’t know if that will be in the coming week or the week after. On Wednesday 9/10, we will make the decision on whether we will be able to begin week 2 or not, and I’ll post that here as well as in email to everyone I know of.

Please inform other players you may know about this change, especially if you signed up with Jenny, since I have very little contact info for those players.

I will also accept additional entries during this time. Regardless of who you signed up with, all correspondence and picks should be directed to me at ( koth@zathras.com ) until further notice.

History of the KOTH

The King of the Hill pool was started in 1998, with a mere 20 players. Four years later, we had 10 times that many participating! In 1999 we had a lot of folks out early, who needed another fix. So we launched a “Loser of the Week” pool in week 5- basically another King of the Hill pool- same rules but with one twist: pick a LOSING team! Ever since then, around week 5-8, we have fired up the Loser Pool. It’s not a requirement to be eliminated from the KOTH to get into the Loser Pool.

Previous KOTH pools

1998: 20 players, won by Bill Washburn

1999: 67 players, won by Annie Davis in week 14

2000: 123 players, won by Steve Omer after the wildcard games

2001: 169 players, won by Bill Guiney in week 7

2002: 201 players, split by Bill Ruddy, Jason Lonsbury, and Nick Dunlevy

2003: 371 players, partial 4 way split between Justen Strausbach, Scott Vess, Kevin Oliff, and John Knipfer. John Knipfer wins overall.

Previous LOTW pools

1999: 49 players, started in week 5 and split by George Creech & Dana Strehle in week 15

2000: 48 players, started in week 8 and split by Dave Hart & Chau Du after the wildcard games

2001: 47 players, started in week 5 and won by Dave Wheeler in week 10

2002: 71 players, started in week 5 and split by Amber Dunlevy and Brendan Oborne in week 15

2003: 106 players, started in week 8 and won by Jeff Dana in week 17
