Bill & Karen’s Poker Site

Welcome to Zathras’ Poker site! The primary reason I put this site up is to show off a few poker tables we built. I’ve also started using this to site to provide info about our home poker tourneys.

New Table Oct 2005

In keeping with my military phonetic lingo, I have constructed table “Delta”. This is my first table actually built to order for a paying customer, Jason C. It is a non-racetrack style, and is a beautiful purple velveteen surface with a … well, a green rail. J It actually looks much better than I thought it would, when I saw the colors. This one is by far my best table- I used my new template to cut the wood and it came out near perfect. It will see its first action very soon!

The first tables

While we did take a few pictures of various stages of the construction, I’m not going to put a detailed construction manual on here. There are many very well done poker table sites, with step by step instructions on how to build tables. I got many of my ideas from sites such as Scott Keen, Pcpotato, and Mark Junell. I highly recommend checking them out.

I built my first table in June 2004. It was an 8’ oval 40” wide made out of ¾” MDF mounted on a banquet table. It had ¼” headliner covered by velveteen. It was pretty nice, but then I saw some really fancy ones online with features such as padded rails and cupholders. (Oh, and btw, don’t use MDF for a poker table base- use hardwood plywood.) So in the fall I offered my table for sale to one of my poker buddies, with thoughts of building a new one.

In January I started planning to build my new table. Did I say table? Make that tables. Since most of our poker nights have more than 10 people, I decided I ought to have two. And hey, if you need two tables, you might as well build them both at once, right?

Fast forward to March, and I’ve pretty much got most of my stuff ordered other than the materials I’m buying locally. Then I learned my son was going to be coming home for a week of leave in early April, and I asked if he’d be interested in helping build my two poker tables. Did I say two? Make that three. Since he was going to put all that labor in, I thought it only fair that we build one for him at the same time.

So, Sunday April 3rd, his 2nd day in town, we head off to Hancock’s to pick up the foam and vinyl. Then over to Lowes to get the plywood and a few other items. Five days and about 30 hours of hard labor later, we have 3 beautiful deluxe tables.

During the construction, we had marked the pieces for each table with an A, B, or C so that we knew which table each piece went with. And soon, we got to referring to them with the military phonetic terms Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie. We decided Alpha and Charlie would be mine, and Bravo would be his. During each phase of construction, we worked on them in order, A- B- C. In theory then I would get the ‘guinea pig’ table, Alpha, as well as the 3rd table, Charlie, which should have all the kinks worked out. In reality, all the tables came out pretty much the same, quality-wise.
