Zathras for President??

2004/09/28 by Randy Alexander

If George Bush were Zathras:

"Zathras know many things, even father does not know. Zathras know all about weapons of mass destruction. Zathras warn of great darkness, but no one listen to poor Zathras. Zathras tell France. Zathras tell Germany. No one listen. So Zathras must do all the work. Zathras invade all by himself. But Zathras does not mind. Zathras even enjoy it.

"All is three. Axis of evil is three. Saddam is the One who was. Kim Jong-Il is the One who is. Ayatollah Khamenei is the One who will be.

--------------------------

If John Kerry were Zathras:

"There are 10 of us, all of family Zathras. Many people <ho, ho>, many people confuse Zathras brothers, but all Zathrases very, very different. Never agree on anything. Zathras' brother Zathres fight in Vietnam. Zathres great hero, get hurt many times. Zathres so good at getting hurt, they give him prize. Zathras never get prize for getting hurt. Zathras drop heavy tool on toe, but Draal not give Zathras prize. Draal only yell at poor Zathras.

"Zathras have other brother, Zathris. Zathris hate Vietnam War. Talk to Congress. Say terrible things about war. Zathris steal Zathres' prizes and throw them away, but Zathres get them back.

"Zathras have other brother, Zathros. Zathros think Bush is great man, very smart. Zathros vote to let Bush do anything he want in Iraq. Make Zathras' other brother, Zathrus, very angry. Zathrus say bad things about Bush. Zathros and Zathrus have big fight.

"When Zathras elected President, Zathras bring whole family to White House. Zathras let each brother be President on different day. Make all Zathras brothers very happy."

I met a soldier last week

2004/07/31

on July 20th, at the Dayton airport, as we arrived back home from vacation.

It was quite unexpected. As we exited the secure section, we saw several TV news cameras and reporters from the local channels, aiming their cameras in our direction. There was a small group of people- maybe 20 or so- standing around, and I asked one what was going on. He said "a soldier's coming home from Iraq".

Since we would have a few minutes before we could get our luggage, I hung around to watch his arrival. I thought that was pretty nice that the news was there to show his arrival, although I did think it a bit unusual. After all, there have now been many rotations, and a single soldier coming home, while fantastic for the family, didn't strike me as particularly newsworthy.

Soon he appeared and was greeted by his mother at the edge of the security point. He approached the rest of the group and began to talk to the reporters. I was standing right behind the cameras, about 5 feet from him and although it was noisy, and he spoke softly, I could hear most of what he said. I soon found out why the news was there.

After the reporters asked him to spell his name, and a few casual welcoming remarks, they asked him about his comments in the Michael Moore movie. The conversation between the reporter and the soldier was something like this: The soldier didn't know he was being filmed for a movie, but apparently he ended up being in about a 15 second segment. He said that he didn't know it was Moore interviewing him (he said he thought the interviewer looked 'vaguely familiar') and he didn't know it was for a movie.

It's often hard to tell if some of the things you read or hear on TV or the movies or the internet is truth, fiction, or some shade of grey in between. I mean, it's all just someone else's words or pictures- it's not like witnessing the events personally. So it was kind of cool to be hearing this soldier in person talking about his experiences.

They asked him what he thought of his part in the movie, and you could tell he was quite displeased. He said repeatedly- and I mean at least 5 times during the remainder of the short interview, that he "wanted nothing to do with Michael Moore, or this movie, or anything bashing America or President Bush". They asked if he'd seen the movie, and he said no, but that he'd seen his segment.  I haven't seen the movie, but he was basically describing it as a clip of him saying something like "they don't want us here". Apparently he was talking about the terrorists and other criminals or gangs as 'not wanting us here', but Moore's editing is intended to convey the image that the general Iraqi populace didn't want us there, which isn't the case.

At the conclusion of the interview, as he started walking towards the rest of his friends and relatives, I stepped in quickly, held out my hand, and said "thank you". He looked at me (with sort of a puzzled, 'who the heck are you?' look) and shook my hand, and I turned and walked away.

I've read many things that lead me to believe that Michael Moore twists facts, omits information, connects unrelated pieces of information, and otherwise misleads viewers in his so-called documentaries, in order to push his own political agenda. Now I know the truth firsthand from an eyewitness, a participant, or rather, a 'victim', of Moore's deceptive practices... Obviously this was but a very small piece of this movie, but it was enough to take my opinion from 'believing' to 'knowing'...  I used to believe Michael Moore was a deceptive manipulator, twisting facts and spewing anti-American hate.. For me, that's now confirmed.

Later that night, I watched channel 7 to see if they showed it, and all they showed was a quick several-second shot of him after the interview, walking up to his waiting friends and relatives. Nothing of the interview. Nothing of him adamantly denouncing Moore and his movie. Maybe that wasn't what they wanted to hear?  Interesting.
